India steel production touched 5-year high

In Aug’25, India produced 14.1 Mt of crude steel, up +15 % YoY, maintaining its position as the world’s #2 producer behind China.

Chart in IFCHOR GALBRAITHS brand colours showing India crude steel production August 2025 at 14.1 Mt, up 15% year on year and 1% month on month. The line graph compares monthly crude steel output for 2023, 2024, and 2025, plotted against a shaded 5-year minimum and maximum range. Values highlight India’s strong momentum as the world’s #2 producer behind China.

Cumulatively, output in Jan–Aug ’25 reached 108 Mt, up +10.2 % YoY, underscoring strong momentum even as global production was broadly flat at 143 Mt (+0 % YoY).

India’s steel landscape is often viewed as the mirror image of China’s — propelled by robust consumer demand, infrastructure expansion, and a supportive currency, all of which are fuelling fresh steelmaking capacity.
